"Thin-Ideal": Is this Western-specific or Universal?"
As globalization has been increasingly underway, social environments have become more complex and dynamic. Understanding different cultural contexts became critical to better perform in such a complex society. Body dissatisfaction and thin-ideal internalization has been long considered as risk factors of extreme dieting behaviors. In particular, thin-ideal was conceived as western-specific. This talk will introduce research findings on sociocultural factors contributing to thin-ideal and body dissatisfaction and will discuss if thin-ideal is cross culturally universal.
